About this artwork
A neighbor lent Elizabeth the antique wooden and metal vessel in this painting. She loves that old objects tell their own stories and trigger experiences with the viewer that are so personal. How many people owned this container and how was it used? Rickert enjoys the challenge of rendering the tarnished metal hoops as well as the beat up wood that has given this vessel such a history. What could this container hold? Marigolds, with a butterfly on… top? Why not?
Elizabeth has started employing more complex imagery in the background of her paintings. She has started gluing Asian fabric to her board and painting on top. Or, in the case of this painting, has used Japanese maple leaves from her garden and has used a different technique to apply their imprint. She paints the leaves and then presses them onto the board, releasing their paint as a print. She hopes the viewer notices how the imprint of the leaves mimics the shape of the monarch butterfly's wings. Please enjoy!
« I now see my career as a series of new expansions followed by the refinement of long periods of physical application. »
Elizabeth Rickert is an award-winning artist based in the United States whose paintings have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions nationally. Her detailed impressions of plants, animals, and nature convey not only the beauty of nature but also solitude and the complexity of rich moments. In her artistic process, Rickert employs varying techniques with oils on canvas. She started as a sculptor, and so, approaches nature with a sculptor's eye- seeing the way shapes and forms and light and darkness interact. She has been fortunate to find museums, galleries, artist residencies, and corporate and private collectors around the world.
