About this artwork
Part of the series “Colors of the Swabian Alps”.
In this image, I am interested in the tension between the tranquil expanse of the valley and the clearly defined group of trees in the foreground. The long, low houses form a horizontal base that anchors the space and simultaneously leads it into the distance.
The group of trees stands as a vertical accent in front of this architecture. It structures the pictorial space, establishes scale, and… mediates between near and far, acting as a classic repoussoir. Behind it, the valley opens up in staggered color fields and zones of light.
For me, the crucial element is the relationship between surface and space: the long buildings structure the composition, while the light dissolves the landscape into calm, breathing planes. This creates an ordered pictorial landscape in which architecture and nature are in balance.
