About this artwork
Part of the series “Colors of the Swabian Alps”.
The quarry doesn't present an idyllic landscape, but rather a place where material and time converge. Exposed rock strata, fracture lines, and patches of color speak of pressure, tension, and intervention. Nature and human order overlap.
What interests me about this motif is its natural structure and composition: the clear staggering of the levels, the tectonic power of the rock faces, the interplay… of solid matter and open sky. The quarry is a place where naturally occurring form meets human intervention.
The image reinterprets space. Warm rock surfaces contrast with a cool atmosphere; surface and depth, stillness and tension structure the composition. The motif serves as a starting point for a painterly exploration of light, mass, and rhythm.
The quarry appears as a place where layering, structure, and inner strength are revealed.
Florian Weiß works with oil on canvas. His training in architecture and fine arts continues to influence his painting: spontaneity and constructive clarity are in conscious balance.
From moments he has actually experienced in the landscape, he develops condensed pictorial orders. Nature is not depicted, but concentrated in form, surface, and color harmony. White does not seek pathos, but rather appropriate intensity – an intense painterly experience in minimal space.
The process begins with watercolors painted en plein air. In the studio, these impulses are further developed and refined in oils. The interplay of structure, surface, and vibrant tension is crucial.
