For an image to be a direct positive on negative film, reality would have to be negative. This could only be achieved by painting a real-world scene—that is, transforming it into a negative—so that it appears as a positive in the finished image. The spatial situation chosen for this was the corner of the studio.
My intention was to achieve the feel of a black-and-white photo, so only the tonal value of the color was important, but I could use a… wide variety of levels to achieve this. Two colors that are very different from each other can appear to have perfectly identical tones in a black-and-white photograph.
The result is that the colour image does not appear to follow any logical system, yet on the black-and-white negative, it gives the impression of a traditional black-and-white photograph.
Gabor Osz is a painter, photographer, printmaker, and conceptual artist with extensive training from the Art Academy Budapest and the Rijksakademie, Amsterdam. She masterfully harnesses light as her primary medium, using both analog and digital processes, including camera obscura and experimental techniques, to deconstruct and rebuild the nature of images. Her interdisciplinary approach produces evocative works that invite viewers to reflect on perception, time, and the very existence of reality, imbuing each artwork with a profound sense of philosophical inquiry and wonder.
