About this artwork
The sculpture Presence embodies the question of life’s meaning: why am I here, why does one form of matter exist in this place while another does not, what is all this for — I think, therefore I am. The tangle of twigs around the bowed figure’s head is a concentration of thoughts, questions, meanings, pain and joy which, on the one hand, weighs down, but at the same time shows that we care.
The seated subject wears a long garment with many organic… folds, legs held together, one hand resting on the plinth and the other supporting the head. The bronze surface is slightly rough, covered with a dark patina. The image fits both a Christian and an antique visual world.
