About this artwork
With "The Weight of Being," I sought to give form to an internal state of isolation and struggle, to that sense of silent oppression that sometimes accompanies existence and makes it difficult to fully inhabit oneself. The dark, faceless figure emerges from a pale, lined surface, like a body traversed by time, memory, and suppressed pain.
At the center of the chest, a hollow contains a nail: it's not a random detail, but the symbolic fulcrum of… the work. That nail alludes to that which stops, weighs, and holds back; an internal presence that both nails and bears witness to an invisible wound.
Through this contemporary material art, I explore a profound and universal human fragility. Matter, with its abrasions and stratifications, does not describe but preserves: it makes the invisible visible and transforms the silence of discomfort into presence.
Giampiero Riccobello, born in Rome, works between Rome and Milan, using painting, sculpture, and unconventional materials, drawing on a background in art history. His style oscillates between informal abstraction and conceptual exploration, favoring processes of layering, subtraction, and material interventions on neutral surfaces, with earthy colors and unexpected accents. His works evoke an indirect human presence and transform common materials into symbols, conveying a sense of suspension, intimacy, and a reflection on memory and the passage of time.
