About this artwork
Heather tells us that Lion Fish is her absolute favorite work to date. All of her paintings are experiments with the exception of color palette or a technique that may first her.
In this case, she began with a light wash, some metallic silver splatters and water splashes along with wiping. She then embossed thick paint kisses using an oval shaped tool. Once she lay the blue and grey background, she employed thick lime, green and yellow to pat… out shapes in what she first thought would become floating leaves in an arc of wind.
The next day, she extended the edges of those leaves using the edge of a palette knife. She realized they had became fish, so she grew their tail fans into explosions. As she continued to work, she interwove the orange fire with the water and teased it into a great tidal wave of power.
Her final marks were the bubbles of pearlescent metallic white. Any water that moves that fast creates froth of turbulence...
« If any brushstroke or scrape of the palette knife awakens the emotional part of your mind, the place where you visualize no tangible object you’ve ever known, that is enough. »
