About this artwork
“Trebuchet” began with cool washes of tonal blues crimson and cardinal red. Heather originally set out to paint a calm, watery scene. Here's how it instead evolved into a great display of energy.
She scraped on some thin dioxazine purple and alizarin crimson corners with her favorite palette knives. This to draw your eyes toward the bright white. Then some highly textural lines and shapes. This stage in the spontaneous creation of ”Trebuchet”… confirmed to Heather that texture and pigment influence her almost without fail, towards an expression of geometry or play of motion. In this case, a trebuchet; a wooden one, splintering as an expression of its own impact? Yes.
The fabric of tightly knit lines represent latent stresses burgeoning inside the structure prior to launch. Gold metallic strings in this fabric change in the light depending on the angle from which you view “Trebuchet”. This assures the painting gets your attention if nothing else about it does.

« If any brushstroke or scrape of the palette knife awakens the emotional part of your mind, the place where you visualize no tangible object you’ve ever known, that is enough. »
