About this artwork
Ernst first washed the virgin white canvas with translucent tones. She let some of these layers dry, then washed over them with other hues to get deep, vibrant combinations. She said, "Each time I came back to look at it, I added my imagination to the misty landscape I saw coming alive."
Full of life, energetic yet moody, "Mystic" draws you in. Glistening gold, silver and pearlescent white sparks jump from the meadows towards the sky. Valley… growth springs from the land, while strong clouds drive in to nourish them. You’ve brought the earth into your room, and Ernst has brought her love of the sky to you.
The deep 1-1/2" museum mount edges of "Mystic" are painted as 3D extensions of the main image.
« If any brushstroke or scrape of the palette knife awakens the emotional part of your mind, the place where you visualize no tangible object you’ve ever known, that is enough. »
