About this artwork
What’s in a name? A lot, in this case. Ok, in all of Ernst’s work. You will surprise your friends by pointing out the abundant flora and fauna in "The Giant..." if it’s esoteric to them.
Here’s a hint. When hiding from orca whales, the gray whales will immerse themselves in kelp forests (the Weeds) for better protection. Gray whales (the Giants) also feed on invertebrates and crustaceans that are found in kelp forests. Giant Kelp beds, which are… all over the Pacific Northwest where Ernst lives, have thick, flexible stalks up to a hundred feet in length with a bulbous growth on the end. They’re black and deep blue in "The Giant, the Sly and the Weed".
Find also the apple, the cactus, the leaf, the deer hoof print, the daisies, and the poppy. Not to omit tropical fare, see also the banana and the Crocodile (the Sly). "The Giant, the Sly and the Weed" is a celebration of the fruits of life, literally, those we eat and those we protect.
« If any brushstroke or scrape of the palette knife awakens the emotional part of your mind, the place where you visualize no tangible object you’ve ever known, that is enough. »
Heather W. Ernst is an experienced artist based in the United States whose paintings have been widely exhibited nationally. In addition, her art has been featured in publications such as ARTSY SHARK. Ernst describes her contemporary abstractions as being snapshots of her thoughts as well as conveying the influence of the world on them. Her striking compositions are most often created with acrylics, pastels, and pen on canvas.
