About this artwork
After the Rain emerges from the quiet that follows a storm; that charged stillness when the air feels thick with renewal. I was drawn to that moment of transition, when the world seems both washed clean and deeply changed. In the painting, I worked to capture not the image of rain, but its emotional residue: the way light softens, colour deepens, and everything briefly holds its breath.
The process was intuitive and physical. Layers of translucent… greys, overlap and dissolve, revealing traces of earlier gestures beneath. I allowed drips, in this piece, to capture the essence of calm after chaos. The scattered black splatters represent lingering tension giving way to tranquility. I wanted to evoke a sense of hope and renewal, inviting viewers to feel the quiet strength that follows a storm. This artwork will bring a peaceful, contemplative energy, transforming any space into a sanctuary of calm resilience.

Irene Watson, a Scottish artist trained in painting, drawing, and printmaking, is deeply rooted in both studio practice and public engagement. Her conceptual abstraction ranges from allegorical oil works, often on canvas or linen, to cross-disciplinary series inspired by modernist and feminist influences. She constructs layered surfaces through bold gestures and embraces fluid, unpredictable processes, creating a dynamic play between balance and discord. Her evocative works draw viewers in with beauty and tension, ultimately conveying profound connections to human vulnerability, environmental fragility, and the emotional resonance of lived experience.
