About this artwork
I always seem to end up going to the same place when I head out to paint on the banks of the river Oder - and, it seems to take place predominantly in the Winter season. This painting was executed on the 18th of February, 2020. A few weeks ago, precisely on the 20th of February 2026, I was there again. It has become a ritual; but it is the fascination with the Winter light, the skeleton of nature so beautifully exposed, the sheer condition of… painting in the cold, where at times the paints themselves become unusable for they turn too stiff. In February 2020 the Spring was really pushing ahead. The very next day I went painting again, this time at another spot which five years later will appear for the second time (''Karlshof in July'', 2025). For ''The Eary Awakening'' I made the wood frame myself. This is something I find myself doing with the ''Plein air'' landscapes - it consolidates & defines the pictures even more.
Ivan Jovanovic oRSoF, a Serbian-Canadian painter, printmaker, and visual artist with a rich background in fine arts and filmmaking, thrives on the interplay between direct observation and inventive material application. He embraces an expressive, figurative style—infusing thick impasto, raw industrial materials, and found objects—using gestural techniques inspired by the likes of Van Gogh, Auerbach, and Kiefer. His works pulse with kinetic energy, capturing the vibrancy, turbulence, and contemplative depths of urban and natural landscapes, ultimately inviting the viewer to experience the raw, immediate power of artistic discovery.
