About this artwork
Corfu is an island - from the point of view of driving - of endlessly curving, spiraling, exhilarating and unmarked roads. For the few days that we had a vehicle we tried to criss-cross across the island to its maximum. At one point my son chose a beach in the northern part of the island. It took us a while to get there. Then it took us a while to park the car. Then it took us a while to find the path to the beach. And then, began the long… ''descent'' down to the beach. The beach itself is very small and when one looks down at it from the top of the hill its remotness and 'out-of-the-way' work immediately upon the senses. The way down is truly very long. It is a constantly zig-zaging stone path where a badly made step can lead to an accident or much worse. The heat was high and the rocks glowing hot; far down below, the Greek-blues, the turquoise, the glistening edges of rock meeting water. This impression stayed with me - just as the long way down (and the way up, too!)
Ivan Jovanovic oRSoF, a Serbian-Canadian painter, printmaker, and visual artist with a rich background in fine arts and filmmaking, thrives on the interplay between direct observation and inventive material application. He embraces an expressive, figurative style—infusing thick impasto, raw industrial materials, and found objects—using gestural techniques inspired by the likes of Van Gogh, Auerbach, and Kiefer. His works pulse with kinetic energy, capturing the vibrancy, turbulence, and contemplative depths of urban and natural landscapes, ultimately inviting the viewer to experience the raw, immediate power of artistic discovery.
