About this artwork
In the summer of 2022 I revisited Montenegro. I know this place somewhat from my growing up, but even more so through the great painter Petar Lubarda who was born there. His grand works depicting the awesome hills and mountains of Montenegro, I feel I can bring them forth at any point. My painting ''Kamen oko Kotora'' (Rocks around Kotor) is an impression of cliffs and mountains around Kotor, plunging into the sea. What's more, it's the parched… stone in temperatures exceeding 43 degrees Celsius. The slabs themselves seem to be melting; collapsing; tumbling into the sea water made present in the smallest allusion below. It is as if the mountains themselves can't bear this formidable heat anymore. Perhaps my painting is exactly this: my attempt to relay the temperature of rocks brought to a boil, or myself before them.
Ivan Jovanovic oRSoF, a Serbian-Canadian painter, printmaker, and visual artist with a rich background in fine arts and filmmaking, thrives on the interplay between direct observation and inventive material application. He embraces an expressive, figurative style—infusing thick impasto, raw industrial materials, and found objects—using gestural techniques inspired by the likes of Van Gogh, Auerbach, and Kiefer. His works pulse with kinetic energy, capturing the vibrancy, turbulence, and contemplative depths of urban and natural landscapes, ultimately inviting the viewer to experience the raw, immediate power of artistic discovery.
