About this artwork
In my description of ''The Spirits Inside the Forest (Canadian West Coast) Num.02, I recounted my discovery of the Haida People and their high-flown artistry of carving totem poles. It was really in Vancouver in Stanley Park that I saw an extensive display of these powerful erections, massive up-right logs carved-out with vivid animal faces which at moments metamorphose into the human. In my first piece addressing this experience, I ended up priming… a wooden panel board with a salmon pink (itself a colour - in its association with salmon fish - highly evocative of the Canadian West Side). With the panel glaring pink, my palette without me deciding turned into raw flesh. The limbs of the trees and the glaring faces, it suddenly became sexual. The powerful undertow of the beings deep inside us smeared themselves out across my panel board. Between the eros and the myth, I know I am still inside that forest, and the creatures gazing at me.
Ivan Jovanovic oRSoF, a Serbian-Canadian painter, printmaker, and visual artist with a rich background in fine arts and filmmaking, thrives on the interplay between direct observation and inventive material application. He embraces an expressive, figurative style—infusing thick impasto, raw industrial materials, and found objects—using gestural techniques inspired by the likes of Van Gogh, Auerbach, and Kiefer. His works pulse with kinetic energy, capturing the vibrancy, turbulence, and contemplative depths of urban and natural landscapes, ultimately inviting the viewer to experience the raw, immediate power of artistic discovery.
