About this artwork
Much like as with the first piece (Canadian West Coast Num. 01), my first journey to the Canadian Pacific coast left me with a powerful impression which carried over into the studio work. The power of the deep green remains the omnipresent influence. I am in awe of the silence: the slumber of the Green, the enchanted Stilness. In this piece I returned to my former reactionary tone: ''Once we were Giants'' - I had to write it. These left overs… of the great forest, almost relics - museum pieces! To think of the continent covered with these beings. I look forward to going back to the Canadian West Coast. (Note: This is also a Roll-Out, much like the Canadian West Coast Num.01 is. It hangs in the same way, and affords the same ease of transport and storage.)
Ivan Jovanovic oRSoF, a Serbian-Canadian painter, printmaker, and visual artist with a rich background in fine arts and filmmaking, thrives on the interplay between direct observation and inventive material application. He embraces an expressive, figurative style—infusing thick impasto, raw industrial materials, and found objects—using gestural techniques inspired by the likes of Van Gogh, Auerbach, and Kiefer. His works pulse with kinetic energy, capturing the vibrancy, turbulence, and contemplative depths of urban and natural landscapes, ultimately inviting the viewer to experience the raw, immediate power of artistic discovery.
