About this artwork
GAIA unites materials that represent the fundamental prerequisites for life: energy, water, and matter. Electrical components, light sources, and visible radiation stand for technological energy flows; water, water vapor, and plants allude to biological cycles. Stones, wood, earth, and plastic mark natural resources as well as their technological transformation. The work visualizes how water in its various states—as vapor, liquid, and the basis for…
plant growth—is intertwined with electrical energy, light, and digital representations of nature. Displays, electronics, and plastic refer to those systems that simulate and control nature while simultaneously being dependent on it. GAIA is conceived as an open, functional object that addresses the dependence of all life forms on interconnected energy and resource systems and makes humankind comprehensible as part of this interconnected web.

Jan-Micha Gamer works with sculptures, installations, functional objects, and participatory formats, combining a background in product design and social design. His experimental, process-oriented, and material-based style utilizes upcycling, assemblage, and materials research—mostly with found objects such as electronic waste or textiles, which he transforms and recontextualizes. His works explore transience, transformation, and circularity, creating a poetry of the used and inviting viewers to emotionally experience the potential of imperfection and the inherent dignity of the material.
