This is the first piece I completed in the Shape Study series, it is #7 because I had completed 6 paper and cardboard maquettes prior to the final construction. All of the pieces were laser cut locally. After laying all of the pieces out flat on my studio table I realized I wanted to create some depth to the piece. I decided to offset every other piece by 1" from the back plate. It wasn't until I completed the piece and hung it that I became aware… of the illusions the piece creates as you view it from different angles. I knew this was a series I wanted to study and construct many more of in the future, and have.
« A passion for aesthetics and unity with metal. »
Jason Rhinevault primarily works with negative spaces and depth in his pieces. The American sculptor offsets some of his compositions from the back mounting plate, by as much as an inch, creating a visual illusion. The use of negative space and depth gives the viewer several aspects to consider. Rhinevault is drawn to metal, as a medium, for its strength and organic qualities. He considers the patina application as important as the welding process.
