About this artwork
Naiad is painted in enamel across nine ceramic tiles arranged as a single composition — a scale that matches its ambition. Named for the freshwater nymphs of Greek mythology, this work belongs to a larger body of self-portraits on ceramic tile: identity explored through the language of water.
Hot pink and crimson surge against turquoise and teal in gestures that feel simultaneously fierce and fluid. Dark navy forms punctuate the flow like submerged… figures half-emerging from the current, while olive and white traces mark the churn of collision. The tiled grid is visible but never dominant — the composition breathes across the seams, refusing containment.
To paint oneself as a Naiad is to ask where the body ends and the water begins. This work doesn't answer that — it inhabits the question.
The ceramic surface matters here. A major statement work for collectors seeking bold, immersive abstraction with mythological and psychological depth.
"At the heart of my work is the fascination with capturing the essence of an experience or phenomenon and retelling it in my own visual language — through gesture, colour and rhythm. It’s my way of witnessing something deeper and sharing the uniqueness of it with others."
Joanna Koziej is a painter, printmaker, and visual artist with a background from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw and international experience in Paris, Japan, and Turkey. She merges painterly, vibrant brushwork with geometric structures, juxtaposing calligraphic gradients, bold patterns, and layers in both ephemeral and sharply defined forms across watercolour, acrylics, ink, and ceramics. Her technique distills fleeting experiences into lively, intricate images that balance spontaneity with structure. Through her art, she conveys a deep sense of presence, inviting viewers to notice, remember, and find quiet reflection in delicate yet powerful moments.
