About this artwork
“The Night Has Its Blue Sadness” is a poetic meditation on introspection and nature, blending surrealism, symbolism, and cubist geometry into a quietly hypnotic whole. At its center is a luminous blue eye—melancholic and contemplative, like a window into an inner world hidden behind everyday reality. Nearby insects—a moth, a butterfly, and a beetle—extend the narrative: the moth suggests nightbound fragility and a yearning for light; the butterfly… evokes transformation and renewal; the beetle adds a darker note of persistence and unease. A dominant blue palette, broken by warm oranges, reds, and golds, builds an atmosphere of night, dreaming, and longing. Realistic facial details clash with sharp, fragmented planes, reinforcing the sense of two realms—concrete reality and drifting thought—overlapping in a single, resonant image.
Joanna Szumska is a Polish painter trained in Warsaw, primarily working with oil and acrylic paints after a foundation in scenography, graphic, and interior design. Her technique blends landscape, organic abstraction, and figurative elements, drawing inspiration from nature, music, poetry, and urban life. Her richly colored, evocative paintings explore the bond between humanity and nature, the strength of femininity, and the emotive potential of color, inviting viewers into a world of profound emotional resonance and poetic energy.
