Relationships, Not Publications is part of Joanna Szumska’s Avatary series, exploring identity and human connection in the digital era.
The painting presents two female figures facing one another: one human and rooted in nature, the other transformed into a technological avatar holding a smartphone. Between them unfolds a symbolic encounter between direct presence and mediated communication.
The flower held by the organic figure represents tenderness,… authenticity, and shared experience. In contrast, the phone suggests a world in which moments are increasingly captured, displayed, and filtered before they are truly lived.
With its powerful title, the work proposes an alternative to the logic of constant exposure: relationships instead of publications, presence instead of performance, connection instead of visibility.
