About this artwork
I created this artwork when visiting a small coastal town on an overcast day but was inspired by the resilience of the people who were determined to make use of the beach. It was a windy and overcast scene and the slipway leading down to the water almost had the effect of drawing the people to the sea and their brightly colored clothes and the yellow painted lines on the slipway made an interesting juxtaposition. Additionally the leaning wooden poles…
and reflective pools of water on the beach lent interest to the scene.
The overall feeling created gives a dreamlike effect to the scene and an air of mystery and fires the imagination of the observer.

Through his photography, Brooks wishes to project a visual and emotional response that extends far beyond the pictorial. His photographs, both analogue and digital, often employ a layering affect where a subject becomes doubled or tripled, thereby creating an illusion of volume, depth and spatiality. His photographs can reflect the imposing nature of urbanism and play with perspective to create an illusory world.
