About this artwork
The spherical humans draw on the ancient myth described by Aristophanes: Originally, humans were spherical beings – complete, powerful, and unified. They consisted of two male, two female, or one male and one female half, joined into a single body.
Fearing their strength, Zeus divided these beings and condemned them to separation. Since then, love has been the driving force that compels humanity to seek its lost half and restore a sense of wholeness.…
The work is executed in oil paint on canvas.
The Spherical People interpret this myth as an image of human longing, intimacy, and connection. Love appears not as a mere feeling, but as an existential impulse – a force poised between vulnerability and hope.
Jorge Humberto Tapia Perez, a Mexican-German artist with a medical background, works primarily with oil on canvas and incorporates materials such as chalk, sand, metal, and textiles. His style interweaves contemporary figuration, anatomical precision, and baroque intensity, uniting controlled fragmentation, symbolic imagery, and Mesoamerican and European mythologies. His works open a space for emotional confrontation—reflecting vulnerability, transformation, and existential fragility, and inviting the viewer to engage with the full complexity of being human.
