About this artwork
Resurgimiento was created as a call for courage and transformation. The phoenix emerges as a symbol of renewal—of beginnings that become possible only after periods of conflict and loss. Its colors subtly reference the bisexual flag, translating personal identity into a broader affirmation of resilience and self-acceptance.
The stainless steel chains introduce a deliberate ambiguity. They may be understood as bonds being released, breaking what once… constrained the body and spirit, or as reminders of the dangers and uncertainties that accompany change. Likewise, the surrounding hands oscillate between protection and threat, support and control, reinforcing the fragile balance between vulnerability and empowerment.
Rather than presenting rebirth as a triumphant event, Resurgimiento understands it as a continuous process. The work reflects on the courage required to inhabit one's own identity more truthfully and to embrace transformation as an essential part of being human.
Jorge Humberto Tapia Perez, a Mexican-German artist with a medical background, works primarily with oil on canvas and incorporates materials such as chalk, sand, metal, and textiles. His style interweaves contemporary figuration, anatomical precision, and baroque intensity, uniting controlled fragmentation, symbolic imagery, and Mesoamerican and European mythologies. His works open a space for emotional confrontation—reflecting vulnerability, transformation, and existential fragility, and inviting the viewer to engage with the full complexity of being human.
