About this artwork
“The Lonely Sea and the Sky” has been inspired by the John Masefield poem , The Sea. As a child, when rote learning was a fashion in education, the first lines of the poem “ I must go down to the sea again, to the lonely sea and the sky”, were imprinted in my mind, and has surfaced after many years to become my muse. The palette and tones describe the fresh air and majesty of the sky , and the awe inspiring feeling of being alone on the ocean.

Julie Hammonds, a self-taught painter with a background as a PE teacher, works primarily in oils and acrylics, drawing daily inspiration from her sea-view studio in Plymouth. Her figurative, classically traditional oil pieces “paint what she sees” but with intense color, hue, and emotion, while her acrylics embrace spontaneity, inviting form to emerge. Through her exploration of the collective unconscious and the rhythms of nature, she conveys profound feelings of enrichment and renewal, expressing the emotional truths and the passage of time within both landscape and portraiture.
