About this artwork
I poured my passion into this oil painting, capturing the ship gliding confidently through endless, shimmering waters under a vast, breath-catching sky. This piece radiates adventure, hope, and the unstoppable spirit of discovery that the Pilgrims showed when they undertook their voyage to America in 1620. Shown in the exhibition “Voyage of the Mayflower” at the Mayflower Museum in Plymouth UK, it was inspired by the sentence from the Captains Diary… that reads….”Sept.23rd /Oct. 3rd. A succession of fine days, with favouring winds”.
Julie Hammonds, a self-taught painter with a background as a PE teacher, works primarily in oils and acrylics, drawing daily inspiration from her sea-view studio in Plymouth. Her figurative, classically traditional oil pieces “paint what she sees” but with intense color, hue, and emotion, while her acrylics embrace spontaneity, inviting form to emerge. Through her exploration of the collective unconscious and the rhythms of nature, she conveys profound feelings of enrichment and renewal, expressing the emotional truths and the passage of time within both landscape and portraiture.
