About this artwork
This oil painting was inspired by the entry in the Captain’s Diary of the voyage of the Mayflower in 1620. “Sept. 11th. To Sept. 21st”
“Fine warm weather and the “Harvest Moon”. The usual equinoctial weather deferred.”
The scene was portrayed using soft luminous colours to capture the universal seasonal rhythms of nature. My hope was to convey the courage of the Pilgrims as they bravely searched for new horizons. In 2020 the painting was part… of an exhibition entitled “The Voyage of the Mayflower”, shown in the Mayflower Museum in Plymouth U.K. to celebrate 400 years since the sailing.
Julie Hammonds, a self-taught painter with a background as a PE teacher, works primarily in oils and acrylics, drawing daily inspiration from her sea-view studio in Plymouth. Her figurative, classically traditional oil pieces “paint what she sees” but with intense color, hue, and emotion, while her acrylics embrace spontaneity, inviting form to emerge. Through her exploration of the collective unconscious and the rhythms of nature, she conveys profound feelings of enrichment and renewal, expressing the emotional truths and the passage of time within both landscape and portraiture.
