About this artwork
This dramatic painting formed part of my exhibition “The Voyage of the Mayflower”, held in the Mayflower Museum U.K. in 2020 . It captures the raw power and determination of a lone ship battling towering waves. The turbulent sea and brooding sky embody struggle and hope. Inspired by the following entry in the Captain’s diary for Sept. 23rd / Oct. 3rd. 1620
“In sundry of these storms, the winds were so fierce and the seas so high, as the ship could… not bear a knot of sail, but was forced to hull drift under bare poles for divers ( sic) days together.” The painting radiates a dramatic energy reflecting a spirit of resilience and adventure shared by the courageous Pilgrim Fathers.
Julie Hammonds, a self-taught painter with a background as a PE teacher, works primarily in oils and acrylics, drawing daily inspiration from her sea-view studio in Plymouth. Her figurative, classically traditional oil pieces “paint what she sees” but with intense color, hue, and emotion, while her acrylics embrace spontaneity, inviting form to emerge. Through her exploration of the collective unconscious and the rhythms of nature, she conveys profound feelings of enrichment and renewal, expressing the emotional truths and the passage of time within both landscape and portraiture.
