About this artwork
In this oil painting, I captured the thrilling moment of the Mayflower arriving in America after a dangerous journey from Plymouth UK. With every brushstroke, I poured in the anticipation and courage of exploration, blending deep blues and soft light to evoke hope and relief at the safe arrival. This piece is part of a series completed to celebrate the voyage of the Mayflower in 1620, and was exhibited as part of my one-person show in the Mayflower…

Julie Hammonds, a self-taught painter with a background as a PE teacher, works primarily in oils and acrylics, drawing daily inspiration from her sea-view studio in Plymouth. Her figurative, classically traditional oil pieces “paint what she sees” but with intense color, hue, and emotion, while her acrylics embrace spontaneity, inviting form to emerge. Through her exploration of the collective unconscious and the rhythms of nature, she conveys profound feelings of enrichment and renewal, expressing the emotional truths and the passage of time within both landscape and portraiture.
