About this artwork
The SEAngles are based on details from the large SEAmaps, which have been transformed and placed in new contexts. Each SEAngle is unique: a collage of photos, foam, fabric, paper cut, found objects, mixed media and acrylic. All SEAngles are also available in handmade frames (40 x 40 cm / black or white).
At first glance, her SEAmaps look like maps, with strange, sometimes familiar shapes of cities, countries and continents, but in impossible combinations.… Layer by layer, these are laid on top of each other, a lot happens at the edges, the coasts, but just as much takes place under the surface - as in the sea itself.

In the SEAmaps, Schäfer's love of the sea, her collection of old land and sea maps, her fascination for ships, containers and ports are combined with her love of travel and the joy of "getting lost" - in foreign places, past times, somewhere between cities, countries, islands and oceans.
