About this artwork
The island of Burano is known for its brightly coloured houses. This picture is of the brightest colours I could find when I went there in 2020. The colour scheme has in the past had a particular meaning, and it is said that the boat is the same colour as the house, since fishing is the main activity for Burano's menfolk. Whatever the reason I couldn't imagine painting my house bright purple like this! The modern boats provide an interesting contrast… to the old and somewhat crumbling neighbourhood. Sad to say the experience of Covid affected Burano very badly and when I returned in 2022 some of the buildings were in very poor shape.
Kate Lloyd is a photographer trained under acclaimed artists, most notably Jonathan Chritchley of Ocean Capture. She employs abstract and verismo styles, using multiple exposures to transform images of horses, water, and Venetian scenes into vibrant compositions, often presented as acrylics or luxury silk scarves. Her work radiates a profound appreciation for the untamed spirit of horses and the luminous mystery of water, evoking both tranquility and wonder.
