About this artwork
St Mark's square fascinates me from many angles. Here the mixture of light and dark defines a different perspective. I find my eye drawn to the bright lights in the archway at the back left of the picture.nThis is the secular, whereas the divine, the Cathedral is still hidden by the darkness of a very early January morning.
The archway promises much to the average tourist, with glass allegedly from Murano, but more likely from China, masks and other… Venetian style trinkets and souvenirs. While purists and locals might bemoan the arrival of so many 'fakes' they do seem to fulfil a touristic desire for a memento of the Serenissima.
