About this artwork
Based on his memories of growing up in the post-industrial Midlands of England, this work imagines a banner which could hang in the meeting place of a cult which celebrates what Victor Hugo called "The Bastard Countryside": illegitimate places within the landscape which can be found between urban developments and rural areas.
The text is taken from a poem by early 19th century English Romantic poet John Keats: "Fanatics have their dreams, wherewith… they weave a paradise for a sect"

« My work represents things in-between other things. I look at in-between landscapes, my process is in-between sculpture and drawing and the end results are between utilitarian products and "useless" art. »
Lawrence Bailey is a draftsman, textile artist, and sculptor based in the Netherlands whose works have been exhibited nationally, as well as in Latvia, the United Kingdom, and Spain. His art often explores elements of the landscape, as well as how people use or relate to it. In particular, Baile investigates "the Edge Lands", which signifies an environment that forms a border between the urban and the rural. For him, these spaces signify transition and change.
