About this artwork
"The Returning Man" is one of the paintings I built on one of De Chirico's unpublished sketches, which the Master of Metaphysics never painted; the drawing represents the ghost of De Chirico's father, who died when the painter was only 16 years old, while the seated mannequin is said to be De Chirico himself; in fact, we read in the author's stories that as a teenager De Chirico often saw this figure which was placed behind the curtains of his window,…
with those exact features and which for him were certainly visits from his father; the environment described in this and other drawings was exactly the room in which De Chirico painted inside the Villa del Seminario.
