About this artwork
This piece, like most of my oil paintings, came about rather improvisationally. I began with charcoal powder and acrylic and then developed it with oils but essentially this piece reflects on the commonality between dreaming and praying. I titled it "Prayer" because there is something that praying shares with the act of dreaming: namely, the fumbling around in the unknown and the twin hopes of redemption at the highest aspiration and just things…
making sense at the most quotidian. And where Dreaming and Praying come together for me is in the act of painting. So this painting is in a way an expression of how I feel when I am painting and, in a larger sense, how I feel just trying to move forward through life.

Luke Jackson, a painter and visual artist raised in a richly creative family, masterfully works with oils, acrylics, charcoal, graphite, and mixed media, drawing on both classical training and diverse global influences. His techniques traverse abstract expressionism, conceptual minimalism, innovative "water drawings," and immersive, large-scale paper works marked by repetitive lines and torn edges. His art evokes the fleeting, dreamlike states between clarity and mystery, resonating with emotional ambiguity and the poignant persistence of seeking meaning in life’s transience and transformation.
