The subject of the work, made using paper-based collage and tempera, is a simplified human head. The form is almost symbolic: its distinct contours are closed, while the neutral gray tone of the background lends the head a restrained, objective presence that functions as a general human sign. The background, which is built from a dynamic mixture of black and white gestures, stands in sharp contrast to this. The paint movements are free, energetic,… sometimes washing into each other, but from which bright colors can be glimpsed here and there, as if deeper layers of the background were breaking through the surface. Thus, tension is created from the dialogue between the restrained, gray head and the troubled, yet hidden space carrying color energies. The composition is built on the duality of the hidden and the visible, the controlled form and the free gesture, where the vibration of the background subtly undermines the apparent calm of the head.
Márta Nyilas is a painter with a deep academic background, trained at prestigious institutions and mentored by Ilona Keserü, exploring oil and mixed media on canvas. Her technique hovers delicately between figuration and abstraction, merging lyrical brushwork, narrative tendencies, and a rhythmic interplay of forms and colors that evoke archetypal scenes in contemporary guise. She invites viewers into realms of transformation, tension, and emotional immediacy, cultivating a melancholic yet dynamic atmosphere that prompts each person to interpret and feel their own story.
