About this artwork
The composition condenses the motif of the Pietà into the intimate space of heads. The tilted female head lifts and holds a head almost reduced to a skull to her face, as if the absence of the body would draw attention even more strongly to the fact of loss. The closeness of the two faces is both tender and poignant: the gesture of holding preserves the last connection between the living and the past. The disturbed, gestural painterly sign system…
