About this artwork
The traditional composition of the Pietà is unusually dominated by the limp, massive body of the man, while Mary's presence appears restrained and fragmented. The tilting of Mary's and the dead man's heads in the same direction acts as a visual sign of complete sympathy. Jesus' face is much rougher, a distortion that deprives him of individual features and precisely because of this makes him general: it is not the face of a specific person but could… belong to anyone. The composition thus expands personal grief into a universal human experience, where sympathy creates an invisible connection not only between mother and son, but between all human destinies. The color scheme of the painting surprisingly radiates lightness, easing the weight of death and elevating the scene from loss to the transcendent. The composition thus speaks simultaneously of the inevitability of letting go and of a kind of uplifting, gentle transformation.
Márta Nyilas is a painter with a deep academic background, trained at prestigious institutions and mentored by Ilona Keserü, exploring oil and mixed media on canvas. Her technique hovers delicately between figuration and abstraction, merging lyrical brushwork, narrative tendencies, and a rhythmic interplay of forms and colors that evoke archetypal scenes in contemporary guise. She invites viewers into realms of transformation, tension, and emotional immediacy, cultivating a melancholic yet dynamic atmosphere that prompts each person to interpret and feel their own story.
