About this artwork
In Island unto ourselves I explore the fragile distance that exists between human beings despite our constant proximity to one another. Each figure appears isolated within its own psychological terrain, carrying private symbols, emotions and fragmented internal languages. I wanted the work to feel crowded yet emotionally separate, as though every character exists inside a sealed island of thought. The fractured surfaces, layered markings and abrupt…
colour shifts reflect the noise of contemporary life and the difficulty of genuine connection. At the same time, the painting questions whether this separation is temporary, suggesting a future where consciousness itself may eventually become shared, collective and impossible to hide from others.

Marc Rayner is an Australian artist based in Sweden who has exhibited his works nationally, as well as in Sweden, Monaco, France, Qatar, Italy, India, South Korea, Denmark, and Japan. The key to his artworks is the creation of 'quasi-landscapes' rich in text and design, or flat and almost devoid of information. This 'distorted zone' is a place where Rayner's tormented, disenfranchised, and often unfortunate characters exist. He is drawn to outsider artistic styles and naive art in broader terms.
