About this artwork
In "Arcus Photinus," I seek the moment of illumination in the seemingly ordinary. What appears as root system, I read as lightning writing: an arc of light emanating from the primordial ground and etching its trace into the surface. Through the negative and the 180-degree rotation, I liberate the motif from its botanical certainty—branches become roots, sky becomes the primordial ground, wood becomes an electrical discharge. shifts, and the image begins to behave like a sign: branching as discharge, structure as event.
The greenish depth strikes me as a sedimented space where matter and image meet. For this reason, the bright form rises – simultaneously organic and technical, plant and phenomenon. I understand it as an emanation: not decoration, but a silent impact of time, energy, and memory. Conversely, it becomes clear that all growth is also a rupture – and every rupture a possibility of light.

Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design, drawing on his artistic background from his studies at the Alanus University of Art and Social Sciences. His technique combines pictorialist influences with romantic-symbolist imagery. His photographs embody contemporary fine art photography and conceptual photography, often featuring monochrome recolors in tertiary colors.
He creates a poetic visual language interested in forms and structures, combining this with a modern, conceptual approach that claims social relevance. In his works, he explores inner and outer landscapes, conveying feelings of longing and threat, as well as a fascination with the hidden. He has published various art publications (most recently "World of Water," 2025), which are represented internationally in academy and museum libraries (including Vienna, Basel, Düsseldorf, and Berlin).
