About this artwork
"Cathedral of Thorns" belongs to the "Abstract Photography" series. The starting point is a prickly plant, but in the close-up, it becomes architecture. The sturdy stems rise like columns, the thorns fanning out between them like delicate struts and ribbed vaults. I am less interested here in the botanical motif than in the abstract-geometric structure: a strict grid of verticals and diagonals that condenses the space and allows almost no glimpse…
of what lies beyond. The monochrome palette reduces everything to structure, rhythm, and edges of light. Thus, a thorny plant is transformed into an imaginary cathedral—a space of points and lines that is both forbidding and fascinating.

Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design, drawing on his artistic background from his studies at the Alanus University of Art and Social Sciences. His technique combines pictorialist influences with romantic-symbolist imagery. He creates a poetic visual language interested in forms and structures, combining this with a modern, conceptual approach that claims social relevance. He has published various art publications (most recently "World of Water," 2025), which are represented internationally in academy and museum libraries (including Vienna, Basel, Düsseldorf, and Berlin).
