About this artwork
"Tree Spirit 01" is part of my "Abstract Photography" series. I seek the intersection of order and growth: branches become lines, knots, loops—a graph of wood, simultaneously a drawing and a neural network. Through proximity, the tree detaches itself from the object; the organic reveals an inner geometry that organizes itself yet remains unpredictable. I am guided by animistic ideas—as in Japan, where trees are conceived as animated beings. In this…
network, I read a mask, perhaps a face: not depicted, but created. Light highlights the branches like engraved paths, shadows close gaps into forms. Thus, the tree becomes the bearer of a presence that oscillates between figure and structure—an image in which the geometric is allowed to pulsate and the organic begins to speak.

Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design and holds a degree with honors from Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences. His technique combines pictorialist influences with a romantic-symbolist visual language. His photographs embody contemporary fine art photography and conceptual photography, often featuring monochrome recolored works that have received numerous international awards.
He creates a poetic visual language interested in forms and structures, combining this with a modern, conceptual approach that claims social relevance. In his work, he explores inner and outer landscapes, conveying feelings of longing and threat, as well as a fascination with the hidden.
