About this artwork
In "In the Shadows," I present a very intimate portrait of two men kissing. The close framing and the intertwined bodies are intended to create a physical and emotional closeness into which the viewer is almost drawn. My color palette ranges from warm ochre and earth tones, which I break up with cool shadows to create a sensual, slightly dreamlike atmosphere. My work explores the tension between visibility and intimacy in queer relationships. The title "In the Shadows" alludes to both societal marginalization and protected spaces where queer love can be lived. Through this ambiguity, I attempt to capture vulnerability, tenderness, and self-assertion in a single image.

Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design and holds a degree with honors from Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences. His technique combines pictorialist influences with a romantic-symbolist visual language. His photographs embody contemporary fine art photography and conceptual photography, often featuring monochrome recolored works that have received numerous international awards.
He creates a poetic visual language interested in forms and structures, combining this with a modern, conceptual approach that claims social relevance. In his work, he explores inner and outer landscapes, conveying feelings of longing and threat, as well as a fascination with the hidden. He has published several art books (most recently "World of Water," 2025), which are represented in international academy and museum libraries (including Vienna, Basel, and Minneapolis).
