About this artwork
Im Wald rücke ich sehr nah heran, bis der geschlagene Stamm zur Fläche wird: eine Haut aus Honig-, Ocker- und Aschetönen, von Licht poliert. Die Kerbungen erzählen mehrdeutig — Harzläufe, Trocknungsrisse, Insektengänge — und lassen sich lesen wie Zeichen: als Runen, Kerbholz, Seismogramm der Jahre, als Karte von Ufern und Strömen in der Maserung.
Mich interessiert dieses Changieren zwischen Wunde und Schrift, zwischen Naturspur und menschlicher… Arbeit. Durch den engen Ausschnitt wird Holz zur abstrakten Topografie; Rhythmus und Maß der Fasern tragen das Bild, nicht der Gegenstand. So wird aus einem Stück geschlagenen Stammes eine offene Erzählung: Erinnern und Zählen, Verletzung und Heilung, Zeit, die sich eingräbt — und ein schöner Farbklang, der das Rohe zugleich zähmt und zum Leuchten bringt.

Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design, drawing on his artistic background from his studies at the Alanus University of Art and Social Sciences.
