I work with forms and conscious composition: precise lines as well as geometric and organic shapes organize the pictorial space. The reduction to a few tonal values condenses the scene into silence and mystery; details intertwine to form almost labyrinthine structures – a melancholy reminiscent of Mimmo Jodice. In "Under Water," I am fascinated by a terrace-like structure in a blue-gray, ethereally vibrant atmosphere. A reflection causes flights… of stairs to tilt into two dominant diagonals that meet in a V-shape. What appears to be an abstract architectural fragment is a glimpse beneath the water's surface: the elephant pool at Leipzig Zoo, including its reflection, seen from below. I want to uncover the unfamiliar in the immediate and create visual experiences from everyday spaces that invite pause – so that the familiar takes on new, deeper meaning and beauty through the lens of the artistic gaze.
Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design, drawing on his artistic background from his studies at the Alanus University of Art and Social Sciences. His technique combines pictorialist influences with romantic-symbolist imagery. His photographs embody contemporary fine art photography and conceptual photography, often featuring monochrome recolors in tertiary colors.
He creates a poetic visual language interested in forms and structures, combining this with a modern, conceptual approach that claims social relevance. In his works, he explores inner and outer landscapes, conveying feelings of longing and threat, as well as a fascination with the hidden. He has published various art publications (most recently "World of Water," 2025), which are represented internationally in academy and museum libraries (including Vienna, Basel, Düsseldorf, and Berlin).
