About this artwork
In "Winter Aqueduct," I follow a narrow, technically defined waterway through the snow-covered forest. The canal appears as an artificial cut—a straight corridor that guides, organizes, and accelerates the water. At the same time, winter settles over it like a second layer: snow traces the edges, dampens sounds, and makes the structure almost tender.
I am interested in this ambivalence between natural space and infrastructure. The water flows as… if it were self-evident, yet its path is constructed; the green of the moss on the walls hints at permanence and moisture, while the snow transforms the scene into a silent state of exception. The fallen branch becomes a makeshift bridge – a moment where the organic and the man-made touch. Thus, for me, the aqueduct becomes an image of intervention, dependencies, and the fragile coexistence of landscape and technology.

Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design, drawing on his artistic background from his studies at the Alanus University of Art and Social Sciences. His technique combines pictorialist influences with romantic-symbolist imagery. His photographs embody contemporary fine art photography and conceptual photography, often featuring monochrome recolors in tertiary colors.
He creates a poetic visual language interested in forms and structures, combining this with a modern, conceptual approach that claims social relevance. In his works, he explores inner and outer landscapes, conveying feelings of longing and threat, as well as a fascination with the hidden. He has published various art publications (most recently "World of Water," 2025), which are represented internationally in academy and museum libraries (including Vienna, Basel, Düsseldorf, and Berlin).
