About this artwork
In "The Double Lake," I turn my gaze 180 degrees: What appears to be a wintry forest scene is, in reality, a reflection in the lake. This rotation disrupts the familiar order, transforming the image into a visual puzzle—simultaneously landscape and illusion. Only after prolonged viewing does the "seam" become apparent: the waterline that both supports and betrays the motif.
I'm interested in this brief fluctuation of perception, when up and down… lose their distinctness. The lake becomes a second space, not only reflecting the world but also doubling and transforming it. Everything is created strictly in-camera, in a single shot – without montage or multiple exposures. In this way, surrealism remains bound to reality: a silent moment in which nature, light, and vision form a new grammar.

Marcel van Beek works with photography, painting, and graphic design, drawing on his artistic background from his studies at the Alanus University of Art and Social Sciences.
