About this artwork
Eclipse I is a hand-built sculptural ceramic vase in stoneware, inspired by the fleeting geometry of a water crown and the interruption of light during an eclipse.
A drop hits water. Energy pushes outward while surface tension pulls it back. For a fraction of a second, opposing forces create a crown. It resembles a flower, but it is geometry made visible by force.
The vase is finished with an experimental mineral glaze. Iron and copper oxides interact… during firing, producing shifting tones of black, bronze, and earthy metallic hues.
Like an eclipse, the water crown exists only for a moment. In this ceramic sculpture, that fleeting instant becomes a lasting form.
The water closes. The light returns.

Mateo Aranda is a Mexican-Belgian artist based in Brussels. Trained in physics and photonics, he developed his artistic practice alongside a career in science and technology. He currently works primarily with hand-built stoneware.
His practice begins with fascination. He follows what creates a reaction in him — a form, a memory, an idea, a question, something beautiful, strange or amusing — and learns what he needs in order to pursue it. His scientific background provides tools for researching, experimenting and learning from results, while curiosity and pleasure determine the direction.
Through making, these interests acquire physical presence. He works with proportion, balance and detail, following a form while leaving room for the material to push back.
Once a form enters the world, it can connect, move, amuse, inspire or open a question.
Form generates field.
