About this artwork
"Shadow and Light" depicts the church's rift in the abuse scandal through a sculpture of a priest. Two sides symbolize the conflict: the perpetrator side, with children's handprints burned into it, as a silent accusation of the covered-up abuse. The other side, with its hands and feet bound, symbolizes the struggle of dedicated priests who are restricted by protective measures. Light and shadow, shackles and branding marks – the sculpture visualizes…
the struggle for change, calling for reckoning, justice, and child protection. It urges society to look and listen to the victims.

Melanie Meyer, a self-taught artist, dedicates her work to the intensive exploration of human experience.
