About this artwork
"Defenseless" embodies the lasting scars of abuse. Cast from the body of a victim, the life-size female figure made of granite plaster stands with crossed arms—her only protective posture since the childhood trauma. The hardness of the granite, normally a symbol of strength, underscores the petrification and vulnerability she has suffered. The gray color reinforces the coldness and rigidity. The sculpture is a powerful memorial to the consequences…
of abuse, a plea for support and protection for victims, and an encouragement to speak out and regain lost security.

Melanie Meyer, a self-taught artist, dedicates her work to the intensive exploration of human experience.
